Sadomasochism
Interaction, esp. sexual activity, in which one person enjoys inflicting physical or mental suffering on another person, who derives pleasure from experiencing pain. Gratification, esp. sexual, gained through inflicting or receiving pain; sadism and masochism combined.
Abbr: S/M or S and M.
For me, S/M is an intense physical, psychologically, sexually primal, metaphysical and spiritual journey inward to my own mastery. A combination of these in balance can bring euphoric feelings, altered states of consciousness and a special bonding between the humans engaging in the scene together.
The therapeutic effects can bring balance and a true holistic self-awareness. Many would read this and laugh at the hypocrisy of S/M being a spiritual experience. I remember coming out into alternative and trying to express my spiritual journey within female domination and the path of the goddess. That seemed like an eternity ago and now you read about these topics everywhere. Having discovered my spiritual path I wanted to continue to travel into uncharted depths of truth. It encompassed mind, body and soul. Having already been involved in ritual and magick I have experienced transcendence through altered states and meditation. Now I was reaching higher into a sexual realm that would take me beyond. Consensus teaches us to fear change. Why would erotic variations be different? Why would someone inflict pain to achieve erotic states of ecstasy?
Anthropologists have shown studies of religious ecstasy being achieve through physical and mental stress. Fasting and many other forms of deprivation and suffering have been practiced in religion to achieve altered states and become closer to God. ( The One, All that is, Goddess)
It’s not unusual to see people with heavy Christian backgrounds dabbling or showing a fascination with S/M. One of my clients is a priest and heavily into physical and mental suffering. S/m is used to stress the body while D/S ( dominance and submission) is used to stress the mind. Many would find this individuals activities contradictory, however in my opinion he only searches for his own mastery and connection with his higher power.
Is this sexual for him? Again in my opinion, (I have very progressive thought, ) sexual expression in all forms is unconscious communication. The physical sensations building up without exploration can make us hungry for release. The Tao teaches it’s people to cultivate the sexual energy and turn it into a higher energy called ” Chi”. Our society teaches us that any sexual thoughts of ANY kind are wrong. If we can get beyond the guilt and move forward we find ourselves exploring and searching. Some remain happy with a set regime of sexual expression and others continue to search for more. Even in it’s simplicity it is still something that makes us feel better and elevates stress.
Those who search for higher forms of knowledge and sexual expression find themselves investigating alternative areas. S/M, D/S, role-play and fetish all seem to be put into the same package when indeed they are all different. Some like nuts and cherries with their ice cream, is just a figure of speech to denote the many combinations of sexual or spiritual expression. Because it is a personal journey we often gather eclectically to achieve our own results for satisfaction and fulfillment.
As we come to understand the spiritual aspects of these sexuality’s, they increase our capacity for intimacy. How can we really judge what is on the other side if we haven’t been there? Daily our world grows and opens new doors dispelling myths about so many things. Surely you can look around a see for yourself the need to connect with truth even if they are not consciously aware of it yet. Piercing, tattoo’s, motorcycles, leather and more are liberating people everywhere as they ride the bandwagon to freedom of expression. S/M is right there also but we’ve made it such a buzz word that people are afraid to discuss it much less explore it. Meanwhile they are fringing along the edges and will eventually head right towards it. As humans it’s only natural we become compulsive or search for more.
So much wonderful work is currently being done in the S/M community. Sexual and spiritual alternatives run neck to neck in progress and people everywhere slowly begin to become more accepting of another’s individuals personal journey. We really need to end the silence and become part of a whole as kinky people. We need to extinguish what Guy Baldwin calls, ” kink-o-phobia”. Even among our own community we are separating instead of killing the ignorance and continuing the process of liberation.
We are just as guilty for trying to decorate our scene as fantasy and fetish exploration because we wanted to be more accepted in the mainstream public. I am not sorry we took that approach and it wasn’t easy to leave some of my personal sexual/spiritual views out of my business /organization, I believe it’s time we began to call the kettle black because that IS what it is. S/M , sadomasochism is a larger part of the picture then we all want to admit. S/M gave birth to so many alternatives many of us enjoy without the physical extremes. Bondage, role-play, flogging and more are part of S/M scenarios.
Everyone has their own scene and many of us just want to know what makes other people tick. Even if we don’t try it this doesn’t mean we don’t want to understand or explore other avenues of sexuality. We should teach our people, love our people without conditions and support EVERYONE’S scene. Gays, het’s, Bi’s, lesbians, Tv’s and TS’s can learn alot from each other even if it isn’t YOUR scene. Somewhere in our heart and soul is a platform where all can stand for the same cause. Let us get out of our sexual valley’s every now and then to step up onto that platform and realize the world is a very big place. Let’s explore our outer world for a richer understanding of our inner world.
